Ahiru - Episode 6 Wig Test by Spwinkles Ahiru - Episode 6 Wig Test by Spwinkles
Nooo surprise, I'm doing another Ahiru cosplay. I have a bad habit of cosplaying multiple outfits of characters I really like.... This is one I've wanted to do for a looong time! So I'm going to finally tackle it. I hope to have it done by Fanime.

This wig is for her episode 6/Sleeping Beauty ballet outfit.
I followed a few tutorials online on how to do the bun. I think I used this one the most for reference: [link]

It's an odango tutorial but it could be modified~

I also used the FW ink dye instead of sharpies this time to get it darker.
Dye info here: [link]

There's a few more things I want to work on--like, flating some of the back with hairspray, getting lighter bobby pins and try to get the crown a little straighter.
This wig is KINDA heavy and slides back a little because of the bun. At least it's not as heavy as Toph is. I still have to bobby pin it everywhere. :\

There's probably a better way to do it now what I did was take a piece of sturdy plastic and cut it into the shape of the cowlick. Then I took a few good pieces of wig hair and glued hair all over the piece. I then hair sprayed it so it stayed in place.  I then cut a small slit into the wig itself and stuck the piece in, gluing around it. (Just be careful the glue doesn't show too much.) and that's about it! :)

what color dye did you use?

I had to mix a few colors: flame orange, process magenta and white. I experimented a few times to see how many drops of each color I used. I think only one white drop, it's been a long time since I dyed this wig. xD But those were the three I used.

i LOVE IT!!! I can't wait to see your finished outfit :)

Are you making the tutu yourself? i've been trying to find a tutorial on how to make a pancake tutu without real results (well i did find one but i got very confused)..

Thanks! I can't wait to finish! I was supposed to have it done last year but lots of stuff came up and I didn't want to rush it.

After an attempt working with tulle, I decided I never wanted to work with it again! xD I found a tutu online and dyed it yellow. It's not a pancake tutu but I think it'll work well enough for the Sleeping Beauty outfit.

I understand the feeling!

I've heard that about tulle :) Well i've looked into making a pancake tutu and it looks really complicated :( So that's why i'm not wanting to do her default outfit :\

If I was a better seamstress I might work with tulle but yeah, it was just not coming out the way I wanted. I admire anyone who can make a tutu, I've known a few! But I just did not have the patience. XD

i was planning on dyeing my Ahiru wig this summer and i wanted to use the FW ink dye method. i love how the color in this ended up and I was wondering what the formula of colors you used to get it this way was?

Ahh let's see, since the base wig of this one was pink, I kind of changed up the ratios.
When I colored a blonde wig, it was for every 1 cup of alcohol, I used 6 drops of process magenta, 1 1/2 drops of white, 1 drop of orange and 1 drop of scarlet. Sometimes I'd leave out scarlet if I thought the color was coming out too dark.
If you start with a pink base wig, you might not need as much magenta. Maybe 4 drops or 5 instead of 6?
But definitttttely experiment with test pieces! Then you can see what shade you like the best.

Hey, sorry to bother you again, but I have two Ahiru wig questions.

I ordered 3 of these [link] like you told me to to make the long braid, but I'm not sure what to use for the short base wig since she has those sticky-outy bits in the back and on the sides. Do you have any suggestions?

Also, for the dye. You said you used FW Ink for the color so I looked that up, but before I buy/order any I wanted to see what colors would be most appropriate. I found this [link] and you could order specific colors but the closest color I could find was 'Flesh Tint'

What color did you use/where did you order/buy it from?

No problem!

1.) For the short wig, I tried to look for something that was flippy in the back and had short bangs in the front.
If it's flippy enough in the back, it's easier to style for her little duckbutt hair. XD
I'm actually going to start making a second Ahiru wig because my first one is getting kind of ratty because I've worn it so much. This is the short wig base that I am starting with this time:
[link]
The only problem with this is that the lightest base I can start with is a light ash blonde (color 22) so I'll have to do more experiment with ink colors.... (I prefer to start with ink as a base for Ahiru but oh well.)
But the shape of the wig gives you an idea of what kind of base wig I like to start with.

Or just search ebay for flippy wigs but make sure the color is close to the extension color you bought.

2.) I asked friends for dye color suggestions because I had no idea where to start. Are you starting with a pink base? Well, if you are (or even with a blonde base) one of my friends suggested getting the colors flame orange, process magenta and white. You have to do tests to get the color you want. I did something like, 4 full squeezes of process magenta, 1 1/2 squeezes of orange and 1 1/2 of white or SOMETHING like that. XD; You must must experiment to see what works for you. The awesome thing about FW ink is that you can mix them really well. (Though once you spray it onto the wig you almost have to immediately dry it with a hair dryer so the ink will set. It'll all kind of not stick otherwise--that's what I discovered. But go through that Cosplay.com thread I linked and you'll see tips and such.)

I got my inks from cheapjoes.com and dickblick.com since they were a little cheaper on those sites.

awesome, thank you! I'm going for a pink base, since I ordered the extensions in pink and the effect of the ink will be different on a blonde wig than a pink one right? and that's where I'm finding trouble. I can find wigs, but they all come in blonde and are out of stock on the pink ones. would a blonde work even though I got the 'Ice Pink' extensions?

and thank you for your help!

Oh yes, there will be a significant difference between blond and pink.
Even between pinks!
My first set of extensions were brighter pink than the base wig for this one and you can tell. It was annoying. D:

If all else fails and all you can find is blonde bases, I'd even suggest buying blonde extensions to match. Blonde can be tricky to match but wigs and extensions all have color numbers so you can match those.
Maybe you can sell the pink extensions elsewhere or if they are unopened, even return them? I don't know Doctored Locks return policies but if they are unopened I don't see why not.)

I don't know when you're planning on getting your cosplay done but if you have some time, just search on ebay more for pink flippy wigs. New stuff pops up all the time!

If you're time constrained, then maybe you'll want to take the blonde route since there are more options.
Or even white. Anything lighter--the dye will cover it better.

hmm. if I got a white wig and maybe sharpie bathed it light pink or something and then used the FW ink dye would that work?

I have a feeling after you sharpie it, once you do the FW ink+alcohol mix, the alcohol will completely strip off the sharpie or discolor it.
I'm preeeetty sure it wouldn't work. You can always test it, of course! But from what I've read about how alcohol reacts with sharpie, I can see it not working.

I've been searching the internet for suitable dyes and came across the FW inks. I'm also doing a Ahiru cosplay

Did you use Flame orange on this wig? e.e

Yup, flame orange, process magenta and a little bit of white.
(I asked friends for advice on mixing colors.)
It's all really about experimenting how much of each ink you put in. But those were the three colors I worked with for this one.

I wish it was a little more duller (since its kinda bright) but that's okay~ I started with a pink base so I knew it was going to come out brighter. (Like my first wig.)

I hope it'll come out okay! I'll start working on it soon.

You mean like do those crazy side poofs she has? XD;
I wanted to but this wig actually sits really oddly on my head (because of the bun and the hair that sticks up) and I think if I fluffed the bangs on one side, my hairline will definitely show...
So I think for this one I won't do that. :/
I dunno, I guess I can test that out. I can always flatten it if its a problem.

I think it'll look good either way. :D I noticed in your reference pic that they were kinda fluffed out so I was wondering if you were going to attempt that, but I think the flatter bangs are a good look too.

I attempted puffing them up with my regular wig. XD At first they just looked like three spikes so after a few wears I took them out. And then I decided to fluff them up again and while it looked okay in some pics, it generally just looked like like my poor wig had a bad cowlick. XD; So since then I kept it flat. lol If I ever style another Ahiru wig I'll attempt them again...
She has such weird hair...

I cut the poor base wig really short and the bun is all extensions. I was thinking the base would have enough extra hair but it didn't. Buns take way more wig hair than I thought! XD;
